Doing a National News Spot!

A few days ago, I was doing a news spot to promote the state fair that I’m performing at. In this contract, I’m only doing my Vintage Organ, so no magic. One of the things that I did was go over what I planned to do with the person I’d be talking to on the show. He asked if he could play the organ and I said “yes”, then asked him if he wanted to just play a song or if he wanted to get a laugh. He said, “laugh”, so that’s what we went with. I’ll post a video of the media spot when I get it.

When you do TV, there’s a lot of waiting around. My call time was 8am, and we didn’t do the actual spot until 9:45am! One of the things that I did was start to play Name That Tune with songs on my organ. I did this about 10 mins before we were supposed to start. I didn’t want to force it in; I noticed everyone was standing around doing nothing. I asked how much time we had and was told about 10 mins, so I started the game.

Not only did this kill some time, but since I had been waiting for close to two hours, I wanted to do something to put some energy back into me! It worked well, and it was a fun news spot!

These news spots can be intimidating, especially national ones like this, but a little bit of planning and a little bit of goofing around make a huge difference!

Showcase

Last week I was at an entertainment showcase. These are where performers do a bit of their show for people who book acts/shows. When watching bands, my number one note for them is to not talk! The amount of banter they do is ridiculous, it’s not a show, you’ve got 15 minute to wow a booker and when they waste 3-5 mins on uninteresting talking on the mic, their show doesn’t look tight.

I love it when I see an act come in to get booked. A good example is Patrick, he came in did a high energy 15 minute set with no wasted time!

I was there showcasing my crank organ as a “roving act”. This is different from stage showcase, you can connect with people differently and have more time. My roving showcase had 45 minutes.

With that time I try my best to connect with people and educate them on how they can use this act at their event. Trying to sell something like the crank organ for events is a bit harder because most people have never seen one and don’t know how they’d use it for their event.

If you’re not using showcases to sell your show, you should look into them, virtually every market has some sort of showcase!

Don’t Let Them Intimidate You!

Last week I had a gap in my schedule, so I threw my crank organ in the car and went to the Pike Place Market to busk with it.

The market has a permit system and rule about how long you can be in a specific spot. When I got there, there was a piano player in the spot I wanted to use, so asked him how much time he had left and put my name next in line. The piano player was visibly annoyed that I got in line to perform at that spot. I should say that since he has a piano, he’s very limited on spots he can do. Me getting in line, cuts down the amount of time he can perform that day.

When he time was up, he angrily packed up his piano. I set up my organ and started to play, and I quickly noticed he was glaring at me from across the street! I took a pic, and you can see him circled in red.

He stood there for about half and hour, then walked by me twice after that to look at my permit. Here’s the moral of the story, don’t let anyone intimidate you when you’re street performing…especially in a permitted situation where there are rules!
