Vanishing Birdcage Instructions!

I have a fairly large collection of vanishing birdcages, and one of the things that I don’t have are a lot of instructions. I’ve rarely come across cages with the original instructions.

I recently came across a few sets of instructions from some older vanishing birdcages to add to my collection!

The set on the left are instructions for the Secondus vanishing birdcage that was put out by Harry Stanley’s Unique Magic in England! This cage was made by YIMKA, and I have one in my collection, so it’s great to pair those two up!

The set of instructions on the right belong to an unknown (to me) cage.

I’m happy to have these in my collection!

  1. Have you ever come across the instruction sheet(s) for the original Will Lindhorst cage? I know they exist , because poring through some of the Potter & Potter catalogs i found these photos:

From the photo it looks like at least two sheets of instructions were included with the Lindhorst cage, maybe more. Interestingly, if you zoom in on the photo , you can see the instructions are titled:
The Bert Allerton Bird Cage – Invented, Designed and Manufactured by Will L. Lindhorst.
Also of interest is the the box label:

Lindhorst Newest Invention: Rigid Vanishing & Producing Bird-Cage.

So I wonder if the instructions include a handling where the cage re-produced after the vanish or is first produced, then vanished ?

    1. the last P & P auction listed a Lindhorst cage as: Rigid Vanishing & Producing Bird-Cage
I wonder if it had a box or instructions as they usually list them as Lindhorst

  2. (follow up to previous post)

Oh, wait , silly me, I should have tried to read between the lines more … scrolling down the instructions in the photo I can read (partially obscured) these instructions:

“My suggestion would be to come on the stage barehanded [obscured] … place the hands behind the back, produce the cage from the [obscured] … and while facing the audience bring it around with one hand [obscured] … means that not only are you vanishing the bird cage, but are producing it as well.”

So that is more or less how Walter Blaney did it.

    1. yep, as a teenager, before I had seen Blaney do it, I figured that out myself. It’d kinda logical thing with how you have to move with the birdcage.

Someone did make an appearing birdcage that was a vanishing one with some elastic in the opposite corners.
